I hate birds. Genuinely terrified.

But when you have little eyes watching every move you make, you quickly realize: your fears become their fears. All of a sudden, my three-year-old was watching the sky like bombs were about to rain down. Dining al fresco felt like torture, and beach days were ruined by my own panic.

I had to flip the script.

Now, my son can correctly identify a woodpecker solely by its sound. Do I love birds now? No. But has reframing my fear made a difference in his little life? Absolutely.

The point is this: how we respond to situations becomes our kids’ inner voice. With great power comes great responsibility.

And that’s why I believe the first day of school deserves to be celebrated like a major holiday! Instead of mourning the end of summer, we can build excitement and create joyful traditions. This small shift at home could ripple out and transform the way kids experience school.

Let’s Party

1. Countdown & Decorate 🎈

A week before school, make a paper chain countdown together. On each strip, write something your child is excited for—seeing friends, meeting a new teacher, recess equipment, or even lunchroom pizza.

Each day, as they tear off a chain, you’ll spark conversations about what they’re looking forward to.

Bonus surprise: On the night before school, decorate their bedroom door while they sleep! Try a sign like “Now Introducing the Newest Second Grader!” Add balloons, streamers, or a handmade banner.

2. The “Night Before School” Box 🎁

Have you heard of Christmas Eve boxes? You know—new pajamas, a holiday movie, treats? Swap the theme for school!

Pack a “Night Before School” box with:

3. Celebration Breakfast 🥞

Do you have a special breakfast for birthdays or Christmas morning? Make the first day of school just as memorable!

In our house, it’s whipped cream with a side of pancakes. I use cookie cutters to make ABC-shaped pancakes and pile on bacon and fruit for a filling send-off.

4. Be There for Drop-Off & Pick-Up 🚗

If your schedule allows, clear your morning and afternoon. Walk, bike, drive them to school. On the way, talk about how they can make someone else’s day better—because kindness leaves the biggest impression.

Give them tools to succeed:

  • Role-play scenarios
  • Brainstorm kind gestures
  • Talk about what bravery looks like

On the way home, play “Peaks and Valleys”—share the best and toughest parts of the day.

5. End the Day With a Treat 🎂

Wrap up the day just like you would a birthday—with dessert and praise. Maybe it’s cake, root beer floats, or even a piñata.

The treat is fun, but the real magic is in the specific praise:

  • “I loved how you played with someone new.”
  • “I’m proud of how brave you were walking into your classroom.”

Write these highlights down and add them to a memory box. Your kids will love reading them in future years.

The Heart of It ❤️

No matter what you do, your kids won’t remember every detail—but they’ll remember how you made them feel.

Joy is contagious, and our greatest hope is to send our kids into schools full of it. Whether it’s pancakes, paper chains, or after-school treats, these little traditions add up to big memories. What first day of school traditions do you celebrate in your family? Share your ideas in the comments—I’d love to hear how you make the day special! Here’s to a school year that’s practically perfect in every way. 💛 Don’t forget to pin this post for later and share it with another parent who could use some inspiration!
